Good Compact Machine March 30, 2007 S. Ramsey 45 out of 46 found this review helpful
An excellent toaster which really does evenly toast whatever you put inside it and the outside stays completely cold. The main reason I bought this was because my disabled mother found that she couldn't manage either a button or lever to cancel the toasting, on other models I'd bought. On this model she can quite easily turn the dial to zero and the toast pops up for her to check. The level to pop the toast back down is also a better shape for her hands. This is a very unobtrusive toaster which is unusual for a 4-slice model. My last one was a monster and took up far too much valuable space in my small kitchen. Top marks to Philips and also Amazon for a great price.
Excellent Toaster September 1, 2007 J. J. Boulton (Middlesex, England) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I wanted a plain toaster with no bells or whistles. This is exactly that and makes the best toast I have ever eaten. It's simple to use and easy to clean out afterwards because it's very lightweight. I cannot praise it highly enough and at 10 its astonishingly good value.
Great value for money July 18, 2008 Julikat (London UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this to replace an ancient toaster that burnt everything, and I have to say I'm very impressed. The toast is always evenly done, although if you put a single slice in, you'll find it's browner on one side than the other. You need to have 2 slices in for it to toast evenly. I'd have liked a 'cancel' switch to pop the toast up, but you have to turn the dial to zero - and then remember to turn it back up the next time. A small niggle, but a pop-up would have been useful. But for 20,(which is what I paid when Amazon stocked it), I can't really complain. It's great value and does exactly what it's supposed to do - toasts!
no longevity January 12, 2008 Mrs. C. A. Skelton-ruth (notts uk) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
my last toaster lasted ten+ years...this one didn't manage 18 months before emitting blue sparks. Never did a good job of toasting anything either.
A dreadful toaster... September 20, 2008 David Jones (England) This is an absolutely dreadful toaster. I like long slot toasters - but they're rare - so after reading the favourable reviews for this I bought one to replace my unreliable Russell Hobbs Glass Toaster (see my review of that) but it's hopeless - even considering I only paid 10 for it! It's impossible to find the correct setting for toasting frozen bread. The instructions suggest the "star" setting at the top end of the scale - I imagine that would set the kitchen on fire! Even down as low as 2 the toast refuses to pop up before it's black and the kitchen's half full of smoke. Yet set it slightly lower at 1.5 and it needs three cycles to produce sufficiently browned toast. (This is all by the way with bread in both sides as the instructions require) Hence the only way to use it is manually, constantly checking to see if the toast is done. The instructions state that you can then cancel the toasting by lifting the drop lever - but you can't; they're wrong - you have to turn the dial back to zero which despite what others say is nowhere near as convenient as hitting an eject button. It's also annoyingly buzzes sometimes and despite what others say the sides get quite warm/hot. It also takes up more room than I've conveniently got on the worktop. Overall I'm really disappointed that a reputable brand like Philips would produce such an awful toaster and I'm now looking for another long-slot toaster - preferably a single slot version like the Russell Hobbs Glass version.
