1 out of 5 stars Terrible Toaster   December 22, 2007

My wife bought this toaster after reading the good reviews of the HD5224.

It is a terrible toaster. Every piece of toast has come out either anemic or burnt, often both. The slots are so small you have to cut the toast, even putting them sideways doesn't seem to work.

And I hate the fact that you don't have an eject button, instead you have to turn the dial to zero to make the toast pop up. This is especially annoying as the dial is so sensitive it takes ages to work out the right setting to have it on.

All in all very disappointing

1 out of 5 stars A dreadful toaster...   September 20, 2008

This is an absolutely dreadful toaster. I like long slot toasters - but they're rare - so after reading the favourable reviews for this I bought one to replace my unreliable Russell Hobbs Glass Toaster (see my review of that) but it's hopeless - even considering I only paid 10 for it!

It's impossible to find the correct setting for toasting frozen bread. The instructions suggest the "star" setting at the top end of the scale - I imagine that would set the kitchen on fire! Even down as low as 2 the toast refuses to pop up before it's black and the kitchen's half full of smoke. Yet set it slightly lower at 1.5 and it needs three cycles to produce sufficiently browned toast. (This is all by the way with bread in both sides as the instructions require) Hence the only way to use it is manually, constantly checking to see if the toast is done. The instructions state that you can then cancel the toasting by lifting the drop lever - but you can't; they're wrong - you have to turn the dial back to zero which despite what others say is nowhere near as convenient as hitting an eject button.

It's also annoyingly buzzes sometimes and despite what others say the sides get quite warm/hot. It also takes up more room than I've conveniently got on the worktop.

Overall I'm really disappointed that a reputable brand like Philips would produce such an awful toaster and I'm now looking for another long-slot toaster - preferably a single slot version like the Russell Hobbs Glass version.
