The best, if you're not in a rush. November 22, 2007 Sleuth99 (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this toaster because of its looks and durability mainly and ignored the poor reviews on the toasting capability given on the rest of the range. We are not disappointed - it looks as you would expect and feels like it would last a hundred years! We chose this model because it has a reasonable compromise between size and number of slices toasted, because it has a dial number selector and because it includes a sandwich cage. I have got to say, it makes the best toast EVER! However, there is a small art to it..... It is very important to read the instructions. I think the poorer reviews can be explained if you don't do this. Put in 2 slices but select 1 element and the 2nd slice only toasts on 1 side - obvious. The first toast of the morning needs a slightly higher setting than the next because the cold metal will absorb some of the heat. Ignore this and the results are inconsistent. The occasional lift to check the progress is probably not needed but good fun. The premarked setting on the timer is about right for most bread. In terms of how thick the bread can be, I think the modern variable width toasters outdo it and you have to be a little careful when cutting your own bread not to make it too thick. The sandwich cage works just fine. Only time will tell if the timer and elements last but they are very cheap to replace so I dont think pose a great problem - the instructions include element changing. Overall, this is a great piece of iconic kitchenware that looks great, will last for ages and, if you take a little care, makes the best toast of your life!
Disappointing March 2, 2008 Michael Charles (Yorkshire, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this three slot version to replace an old Kenwood that had served us for about eight years before its elements gave up the ghost. We believed the positive review, ignored the other warnings about Dualit, got sucked in by all the stuff about "icons", and dived in at great cost. It has turned out to be an expensive disappointment. Well made it is, good looking it is, but efficient it most certainly is not. The slots, at 28mm are just a fraction too narrow for two slices of normal bread (if you like single sided toast). So you use the sandwich frame thing but the toast still bulges out of the side and catches on the guards at the side of the slot. The browning is not even (as claimed) but very uneven and the slots are just a fraction too shallow for a slice of normal bread (so the top gets left un-toasted) and also not wide enough for the toast to be placed in the other way. Somehow the Dualit people have got the shape of modern British loaves wrong! In the old Kenwood (cost 18) we could toast just about anything but the Dualit's slots are too narrow for teacakes and buns. And to top it all, lightly toasting smaller things like a crumpet or a square waffle is impossible because they a) cannot be ejected high enough by the silly manual lever (which acts on one side only meaning that an attempt to eject a crumpet results in it rolling down the arm to lodge just as deep in the slot as it was when it was toasting), and b) get caught in between the ejector finger and the side of the slot - thereby making a nasty burned mess. If you are looking for a designer toaster to look good in the kitchen and need to do no more than toast smallish square slices of bread then this is great. But for real world toasting it is ineffective, inefficient and cheekily expensive.
