Bad taste October 9, 2007 M. ARNOLD (Devon) 33 out of 34 found this review helpful
I originally reviewed this kettle after a couple day's use and was generally quite pleased with it. It's still an okay design in my view but I have a big problem with the taste of the boiled water. It's tainted with a strong chemical taste. I started using the kettle at the beginning of October 2007 and now at the end of December 2007, and after using the kettle several times a day the bad taste remains. I contacted Russell Hobbs who advised to boil the kettle with Bicarbonate of Soda which I have done several times to no avail. I see that another reviewer has noticed the same problem. We have got to the point where we are going to buy a different kettle. My advice, don't waste your money.
We've stuck with it for 4 months February 19, 2008 Mr. Michael Johnson (Cymru) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
We took the original back because it was almost impossible to boil it again the same day. Feedback from the manufacturer was that it is designed to re-set after 45 seconds. This will often not happen without some kind of manual intervention. 4 months on and the metallic taste has been long forgotten and we have learnt to remove the lid completely in order to allow kettle to cool quite quickly if we need a re-boil immediately. Otherwise, remaining water stays hot enough for ages for anyone except the tea-drinker who demands boiling water to scorch their tea and tongue. I would buy another one (unless it was because mine broke!) - especially at 20. We must be saving quite a bit in electricity on this - not least because the element doesnt need to be so powerful. I suppose if there's one thing that occasionally worries me it's the capacity which is less than some kettles - to allow for all that insulation. For the rare occasion that we have to make umpteen cups I would consider getting a cheapo Asda 5 kettle as backup...
Expected the worst - but pleasantly surprised February 29, 2008 H. Allen (Hertfordshire, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this kettle first - read the reviews after - and was gutted to note that all reviewers were strongly suggesting "don't buy"! I was going to pack it up and take it back but decided to live with it for a couple of days and see how we go. Well it has been a few days now and, you know, I think I like it. I wonder if the manufacturers have read these reviews and done a quick update because my kettle has not, and never had, any bad taste at all. After it has boiled I can fill it with cold water and it will reboil, it will reboil after around 30 minutes anyway - but even then the water is easily hot enough for my tea or coffee - (although I am not a tea expert so maybe I am missing the joys of 100 degree tea) - In fact I even have some good things to share, as I have small, accident prone children I love the fact that the lid closes off, rendering it marginally safer than other 'open top' kettles, plus it is heavy so cannot easily be dragged off the side by grasping fingers! Very importantly it looks very nice and makes me feel like a good, smug energy saving citizen. Personally, and to my great surprise, I would recommend this kettle to all, except perhaps those who may have issues with the weight, or the fiddly lid.
SOME SHORTCOMINGS November 17, 2007 C. Emerton (UK) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Boils slightly noisy but the most annoying shortcoming is the ability to reboil. In my view the thermostat is too sensitive and even up to an hour later you still can't get the switch to stay on to boil the water again. Its build quality seems OK but I have some doubts over the lid which sits in lugs on either side of the kettle top. I expect the plastic lugs to wear with use and then will become loose and inefficient.
great idea clumsy design November 18, 2007 prattfink (uk) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Love the idea but think it needs some refinement yet. As the above post says the most annoying thing is that you cannot reboil the kettle for a certain length of time after it has boiled which means unless you are standing over it you do not get just boiled water for drinks. It does keep the water very hot for a longtime which is good. The lid has to be taken off each time to fill it which is annoying and the pouring action is really bad too - plus the kettle is HEAVY! Sorry, not alot of good points there, it does look good!
