Product Description

Save energy and money with Eco Kettle - the best selling eco gadget in the UK, at the lowest available price from Ethicalsuperstore.com. Until now, accurately measuring the amount of water to be boiled in your kettle has been all but impossible. The result? It is estimated that, on average, we boil twice the volume of water needed every time. Which means twice as much energy, twice as much time. With a 3kW kettle that’s the same as wasting the energy of around 50 light bulbs!

The Eco Kettle is different: its internal reservoir holds a full capacity of water ready for use, while the measuring button allows any quantity – from a single cupful to full capacity – to be released into the separate chamber for boiling.

The result? Exactly the right amount of water every time you boil – and no more waste.

The Eco Kettle has been approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute and is recommended by Powergen as a pioneering product in the battle to save energy in the nation's homes. During independent consumer trials directed by the Energy Saving Trust, the Eco Kettle used over 30% less energy than standard kettles.

Eco Kettle features include:

  • 3kW stainless steel concealed heating element
  • Steam control and boil-dry protection
  • Cordless; 360 degree base with cord storage
  • Locking lid with illuminated on-off switch
  • Washable limescale filter
  • 230 volts AC
  • 1.5 litre capacity
  • 12 months warranty

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good   July 3, 2007

After years of nagging my wife not to boil a whole kettle full of water to make a single cup of coffee, I thought that the Eco-Kettle would be the answer to my problem. And so far, it has been.

It arrived within a couple of days of placing the order through Amazon and the instructions for use are pretty good. Within minutes, the kettle was up and running and I had my first cup of coffee using just the amount of boiling water needed.

The kettle includes an open-valve option which allows you to boil the entire kettle-full of water for those occasions when you need a lot of boiling water. Admittedly, I found the instructions for this function a little confusing at first but it soon became apparent when they meant.

We've not experienced any of the problems that other reviewers here have complained about, particularly the issue concerning the leaky seal, so I assume that the makers have corrected the problem that seemed to affect the earlier models.

All-in-all, we highly recommend this kettle and as well as it being sold at a very reasonable price, it has also saved a few domestic arguments too!

5 out of 5 stars The REAL advantage of the Eco-Kettle...   January 19, 2007

One thing that no-one's mentioned so far is that it makes a fantastic cup of tea! With normal kettles you'd often be boiling water that's been boiled before, which really affects the taste, especially after two or three times. With the Eco-Kettle you're effectively using fresh water each time. It's really rather brilliant.

Of course, there's nothing particularly revolutionary about the Eco-Kettle, except that it can boil as little as one cup rather than the usual minimum of 0.5L. The separate chambers simply mean you don't have to fill it up every time you want a cup of tea - it's essentially a device for lazy people. As another reviewer mentions, you can measure how much you boil (to an extent) with a normal kettle. There you measure at the tap, here you measure when boiling. However, this is perfect for a student living in a shared house who wants to make a cup of tea in his bedroom, or indeed anyone who doesn't have their kettle near a tap.

As for the manufacturer's "cup size" being only 200ml, what difference does that make? It's just a guideline. It isn't difficult to work out that if you need a little more than 200ml you fill the boiling chamber a little above the 1 cup mark.

Overall, excellent product.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent kettle with truly excellent customer care   September 25, 2007

Bought an Eco Kettle last December (2006) through Ethical Superstore, looked like a good design idea in principle. Very fast, very quiet - and it looks nice, rather enjoyed seeing it on my work surface. Great idea to be able to fill reservoir with filtered water and then use small amounts as required. Perfectly OK for single-handed lifting when only part full, with a handle that is easy and comfortable to grip. Did need to use some pressure to press the plunger, and both hands to lift kettle when full, being slight of build and a bit arthritic in the hands. But that would be the case for any kettle, so I wouldn't hold that against Eco kettle. So as you can tell, I was very pleased with it...and then in September(2007)it stopped working. Devastated. After checking all the obvious things, contacted Product Design (the manufacturer) who provided truly amazing customer care. Prompt response to emails and phone calls, when I emailed them they called back immediately and after talking me through their fault diagnosis routine over the phone, concluded that the problem was not obviously curable...and I received a replacement kettle by courier the following day! I was very happy with the original kettle. The fact that my first one developed a mystery fault is in my opinion just "one of those things". With such great backup from Product Creation, nobody need think twice - don't be put off the the odd negative review. HT

5 out of 5 stars Design improvements have been made   September 14, 2007

I bought an ex-display, unboxed eco kettle ages ago from the high street at a bargain price, but it recently developed a leak somewhere around the base. I've never had a kettle develop a leak like that before regardless of age, but I don't know how badly it was treated before being sold to me. So I decided to take a chance and replace it, because otherwise, it was a pretty good kettle. I bought from Amazon via seller "Ethical Superstore" this week - it arrived complete with free box of 6 fair trade cereal bars too :-)

As mentioned by a few other reviewers, the old one sometimes leaked a little bit around the cold reservoir lid at the top, so could leak a bit of cold water into your drink while pouring. The new one has a deeper seal ring and doesn't leak at all - I can fill the cold reservoir to the top and hold the kettle upside down without a drop spilling.

Another criticism was the handle getting hot if reboiled quickly. My old one did that too. It had the on/off switch integrated with the 'on' light at the top of the handle - the picture on Amazon at the time of writing shows this old design. The new kettle has this switch moved underneath the handle, separate from the 'on' light. The handle with this new design has never got hot.

The spout on the new model has a small rim around it and seems to pour better - the old one was messy if tipping out a large volume of water and tended to drip quite a bit down the kettle front. The new one is almost totally drip free.

The cold reservoir lid has a stiff point when you pull it open, which holds the lid in the open position for filling. This is much more positive in the new kettle - while the old one didn't stay open without being held, the new one works well. I'm not sure if this is a design improvement, an artefact of my old kettle being ex-display or just variability in manufacture.

Problems that remain: If there's lots of cold water in the reservoir then you still need to pour a drink quickly after boiling else the hot water is rapidly cooled by the volume of cold water next to it (no real hardship but as other reviews have mentioned, this can mean you reboil the kettle more than you might otherwise, which damages the 'eco' side of things a bit!). If pouring hot water *immediately* after boiling (impatient) then when returning the kettle back to vertical it occasionally spits steam & water a bit, as remaining water in the spout falls back onto the still-hot element plate. One reviewer was concerned about the safety of this, but I've never had a problem with it personally - it's pretty minor.

Regardless of eco credentials, being able to fill the reservoir to the top and thereafter quickly boil only as much water as I need per drink without having to go back to the tap pleases the lazy side of me no end! That's the main reason why I got another one of these. It seems that the design improvements have addressed a lot of the hiccups that the old kettle had. If you're in the market and worried about electricity consumption or perhaps just as lazy as I seem to be ;-) then it's a worthwhile buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best kettle I've ever had! Super-fast energy saver. V. Stylish.   October 6, 2006

I love my Eco-Kettle! It took a little getting used to but now I wouldn't be without it. It's super-fast - boils a cup of water in no time - and it's wonderful knowing I'm doing my bit for the planet as well. It may seem very un-PC to say this but it also looks gorgeous - ultra-stylish. When I visit friends now, I can't believe how long their ordinary kettles take to boil water in comparison to my super-fast Eco Kettle... I've had it for over a year now and it's survived round-the-clock abuse from this self-confessed caffeine addict.
