I wanted to write a review about this kettle as we've been so pleased with it since we purchased it a couple of months ago - so I was shocked to see the 1 star review of it on this site.
Unlike the previous reviewer, we've had no problems with taste of the water from it. More importantly, this kettle is a real pleasure to use: it's easy to fill though its generous spout, you flick the button on...et viola, water's boiled quickly and very quietly!
What we also like about it - apart from its good looks, which are reminiscent of Alessi at a fraction of the price - is it's pleasing weight, balance and texture of the rounded handle when pouring.
Regarding the whistle: you can turn it off at the base if you like though we find it useful and like the sound (satisfyingly realistic, except for the slightly abrupt way it decays to silence, if you're being picky). My only other small quibble is that the water-level gauge can be tricky to read at times as condensation builds up in it, but when that's the case I just tilt the kettle a bit, which clears it up.
On the whole though we think you'll agree this is triumph of good features, design and value for money.

Yes, the taste/smell is a real pain to get rid of and clearly a fault in the product, so I'll be emailing the manufacturer about this. But it does go eventually - after 10 boils it was still quite strong so I scrubbed the inside with some ecover washing-up liquid and it's fine now. Of course, this should not be necessary, but if Morphy Ric could fix this defect, then it would be a super little kettle - very stylish, easy to fill and really nice to use ONCE you get rid of the worrying smell!!!
The taste has returned. Thought it had disappeared but I was drinking coffee then. Now I've switched to tea, I can really notice a horrible taste. Will be returning the kettle.

A kettle with a whistle is a bit of a novelty and I guess would appeal to the older generations whom remember the real ones especially ones who forget they put the kettle on in the first place rather than just wanting to know when it boils - which was important with the real ones powered by gas.. well the whistle is annoying as mostly, you would be stood there in the kitchen waiting for it to boil and have to listen to the electronic whistle every time and especially annoys younger members of the family. But Hey! You can switch off the whistle with a tiny switch underneath... but unfortunately it switches itself back on from time.. However, this is not the main reason this kettle is now in the bin.. the water upon and up to every third boil tastes and smells very bad - like you are boiling some toxic waste and having tried to clean it several times, nothing seems to work, as the problem is with components and heat and some chemical reaction - though im not a scientist.

I loved the look and styling of this kettle but was very disapointed with it.After boiling it for the first time and then repeating to get rid of any deposits in the kettle i found that my cup of tea tasted bloody awful.I percevered and about 1 in every 4 brews made tasted ok but this went on for 4 weeks so i dont think it would have improved,so i returned it.The only problem now is that i am stuck with the matching toaster.Happy days.
Bad paint job April 25, 2008

I have had no problem with the taste in my kettle, although my son says he had, but the paint finsh started to deteriorate almost immediately, at first I thought I had scratched it but soon spots started to appear all over the kettle and my son is experiencing the same problem, I have a black one, my son a cream one, I am aware that several other people have had the same experience although I believe Morphy Richards do not seem to think there is a problem, however, mine has gone back and like a previous reviewer I am left with a matching toaster. I did look at replacing the kettle with a similar model but on checking the one on display I found it had the beginnings of the same paint deterioration.
