`Successful bread making is an art, requiring good quality ingredients, plus time and energy, due to the importance of thorough kneading.
`The Panasonic Automatic Bread Bakery' is therefore ideal for anyone who has been discouraged from making their own bread in the past.
Experienced bakers will also enjoy using this automatic way of making their family favourites.
One of the main advantages is that the most tiresome element of bread making, i.e. kneading, is completely automatic, leaving you time to spare and no dishes left to wash, because the pre-programmed cycle all takes place in the same pan. In addition, our automatic raisin nut dispenser will drop your choice of dried fruit/nuts into the dough at the precise time during kneading, so that there is nothing left for you to do after pressing the start pad.'

It took me some months of research and reading the Amazon reviews, before I was convinced that this wouldn't be another 5 minute wonder bound for a cupboard, like the `gadgets', Tom Norrington-Davies hints at in his book, `Cupboard Love'!

Simply choose your recipe, place the ingredients in the non-stick bread pan, using the measuring spoon and jug included, select the options for your chosen loaf, switch it on and off it goes! You can even time it to come on and cook at a later stage in the day.......in time for tea, or breakfast!

Gluten free program included along with a `dough' option and a `bake only' option.
Easy to clean and not too cumbersome.

The 50-page booklet is an operating instruction guide and cookery book combined.

The first part includes `Safety Instructions`, `Basic Principles`, and `Baking with your `Bread Bakery ', `Care & Cleaning' and `Baking Tips`
The `Recipe Section' is so concise that I can honestly say you will not need to go to the further expense of buying a dedicated `bread machine cookery book`!

Pages 25-46 are split into the following sections:-

Basic White
Basic Brown
Whole Wheat
French
Italian
Sandwich
Gluten Free
Dough
Cakes and Teabreads

Within each section are a number of recipes which are as simple as a `rapid loaf', `milk loaf`, `white sandwich loaf' or a `malted loaf' to the more sophisticated sounding `Anchovy and Sundried Tomato loaf', `Banana and Muesli loaf', `Mushroom and Pancetta' or the `Spicy Fruit' loaf, from the `gluten free' section.

It finishes with a `troubleshooting guide' which covers every possible less than perfect outcome and suggests a solution for the next time, from why your bread might not have risen properly to how you can keep your crust crusty!

Having read all the reviews for various breadmakers first I decided eventually to purchase the Panasonic. I was a complete bread-making novice but have found this machine to be my new best friend. Its so simple to use, and I've never had a bad loaf from it. You can either buy all the separate ingredients, or for speed I sometimes buy the ready-made packets of granary loaf, tomato and parmesan etc, just empty into the tin, add water, set the dial and it can be ready in 2 hours. The smell throughout the house is fantastic and the warm bread is absolutely delicious. My family love my new toy nearly as much as I do. I'd definitely recommend it.

Good Points: Turns out good loaves every time (unless I make an error!) even gluten free which lasts about 2 days before it goes hard and stale, a great step up from the shop variety which comes stale and crumbly from the start. Has a timer so that you can wake up to fresh warm bread - makes getting up for work a dream!

Bad Points: You tend to put on a lot of weight eating all that delicious fresh bread!! The bowl can scratch if not cared for, but all you have to do is rinse it out every now and then to clean it, so no fussy messing about.

General comments: My husband bought me one for Christmas last year (at my request). I have not bought a single shop made loaf since, and realise what junk it is when I eat it at other venues. The children love a fresh loaf of white bread! I have to fight my husband to make the bread now as we both love to see who can make the best loaf. Buy your flour by the sack as its cheaper and lasts longer. I did put on a stone in weight just after Christmas as a result, but thankfully it has gone now!! I have had 2 other bread makers prior to this one one expensive Philips (which kept overheating and made doughy bread) and one cheaper Russell Hobbs which was not great with gluten free and ok with standard bread, but the crust was far too thick and hard all the way round the loaf. This is by far the nicest producing bread machine and a great price too, don't be fooled by paying to much! I paid 115 for my Panasonic but they have come down a little now.

I was not sure about buying one of these but tempted because of the fresh bread that I so desperatly wanted...I thought... would it end up in the 'kitchen gadget' cupboard...well I have bought one...and it will not end up in the cupboard it definately will be used ..because its the best item I have ever purchased...I'm an OAP.. and found it very easy to use...the bread is absolutley delicious...made apricot,pecan and hazel nut bread..and cinnamon and mixed fruit bread ...today granary...all have been perfect...young mothers give your kids a treat...pensioners go back to the memouries of the olden days...a loaf of bread works out to about 50p a loaf...but you know whose has made it and when!!!...fantastic machine...10/10

A really good machine had mine for a while now and never had any problems with it.I did own another machine previously when they first came on the market and I used to have a problem with the paddle becoming detached and embedding its self into the loaf sometimes so deep you had to destroy the loaf to extract it, and once my dozy husband half asleep in the early hours making sandwiches for work tried to cut the loaf not realising that the paddle was still inside damaged the paddle and the electric carving knife that he was using (silly boy).The loaves produced with this machine are lovely they rise well and have a nice texture although I must stress as with all bread machines that the ingredients must be measured accuratley.It takes 4 hours to make a basic white loaf, 5 hours to make a sandwhich loaf (which is very nice)which may seem a long time to a novice bread maker but alot of this time the machine is resting just keeping the dough warm so it can rise. You can make a loaf on the rapid setting which takes 1 hour 55, but it will turn out smaller as its not had as long to rise, its ok but not quite as nice a loaf baked on the basic setting, from what I can gather alot of rapid settings on other brands of machine turn out horrible results.You can make loads of flavoured breads both savory and sweet also pizza dough if you like to make your own pizzas, there are recipes in the booklet included and you can also fined books on breadmaker recipes that can be adapted to your machine. May I recomend that you buy an electric knife for slicing your bread as this makes slicing alot easyer as the crust is soft when it first comes out of the tin and is hard to cut without it looking like a pit bull has had hold of it.Also its best to store it in an air tight container. Worth buying *****
PS. Some brands of yeast are better than others,the one with "nowt taken out" is good if you know what I mean.
