It's Pucker! October 11, 2006 Wakeskate (Fleet) 36 out of 43 found this review helpful
I was given the Flavour Shaker as a birthday present and I love it! When I made the hot tandoori rub from the recipe card for my friends recently they wanted to know what the noise was coming from the kitchen. When I showed them the shaker with the ball inside they thought it was a great idea. It crushed the coriander seeds and chilli in no time and I put it into the dishwasher to clean afterwards. It's more hygenic than my pestle and mortar as I store it with the lid on so it doesn't need to be cleaned again before I use it, unlike my pestle and mortar.
maybe i should be a rocket scientist ?? February 19, 2008 Mr. D. C. Thomson (benfleet , essex, uk) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
nearly didnt buy one of these because of all the negative reviews but im certainly glad i did. it amazes me what rubbish people can write. 1) yes you certainly have to shake vigourously to crush things but you dont have to be a weightlifter. 1 clove of garlic in 20 shakes. 2) as above it does crush garlic ! ive also done dried chillis , basil , oregano , shallots. the one failure so far was some almonds probably could have done them if id had the time but i was better off putting them in a bag and bashing them. 3)as for aligning the arrows , give me a break , yes you can lock it together in several ways but if you just make sure that the black grip all lines up , as on the picture then its always going to be in the right position. you dont need to overtighten it either as i suspect most have done theres a gentle click when the arrows line up. not sure about the plastic cracking , used mine 20 times + and theres no sign of any. only time it leaks is when i open it up ! thats the one annoying bit if you have added oil and perhaps want to taste it then add some more ingredients , you do end up getting oil all over your hands and the shaker. maybe the people who have written bad reviews were expecting it to dice things or crush within 1 or 2 shakes ? no idea , maybe the designs been improved ? but im certainly happy with mine
Handy Gadget December 29, 2005 Meadows (Somerset. UK) 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
After having read that this item did nothing more than mix up the ingredients, I was put off and decided not to purchase one. However I received one as a gift, and am really pleased with this item. The only thing that holds you back is your imagination; yes it's an alternative to a pestle & mortar, but I never find those things work that well, whereas this really does work and it does a lot more than just mix every thing up. It's easier to clean than a garlic press, makes great rubs, ideal for flavoured butter, salad dressings. A little pricey but it's very sturdy and takes up no space on the work top. Having sung the praises of this shaker, I now have to add that this is great if you have plenty of strength in your hand as it need to be shaken well, but if you don't have the strength it's hard to get everything mixed and crushed!

If, like me, you do all the cooking at home using fresh ingredients to create meals for your family, you will appreciate the ease of use and time saving qualities of this weird looking gadget. I used to use pestle and mortar daily and then an electric coffee, which is virtually impossible to clean properly. This thing is A LOT quicker than a pestle and mortar and cleans in seconds. Perhaps a few quid overpriced but better than spending ages grinding spices the old fashioned way. This is the 21st century afterall!!!
21st Century Weeble December 15, 2005 Mr. Oliver C. Wright (UK) 24 out of 31 found this review helpful
For sheer entertainment value this product is like a comedy chef's apron. You know the type, aprons that have a picture of a woman's body wearing nothing but skimpy lingerie. Funny the first few times you use it, after that it's an apron. But just like an apron, Jamie Oliver's Flavour Shaker does it's job quite well once you get over the novelty factor.Looking like a cross between a 21st Century Weeble and a cocktail shaker, it's designed mainly for crushing and mixing herbs and seasonings. In that respect it usually does the job better than a pestle and mortar providing you're not too picky about consistent results. I only say that because the first few times you use it you can get a bit carried away; dancing around the kitchen while singing "La Bamba". (or perhaps that's just me) Other things I've tried in it, with varying success, are: small pieces of chopped fruit for a sauce (quite good), an ice cube in with a seasoning (be vigourous), a boiled egg for egg mayonnaise (didn't work), flaking pieces of cooked fish (good) and smashing de-shelled pistachios or peanuts (excellent). Anyway, it's easy to use and easy to clean. If it encourages you to get a bit more adventurous with your cooking that can only be a good thing.
