5 out of 5 stars Making ironing that little bit easier   January 4, 2008

Looking at the Philips website, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the GC4444 and its younger brother/sister the GC4340, which has scored very well in Amazon consumer reviews. They both have the same automatic shut-off, double active calc and steam boost functions, however the GC4444 is more expensive and it also has a slightly smaller water tank (335ml as opposed to the 350ml one in the GC4340).

Where the GC4444 scores over its sibling is in the addition of 2 further technologies, the first being the Steamglide soleplate, which has two sets of steam vents to assist in smoother gliding. The other is a system called Ionic DeepSteam, which atomises the steam from the plate, supposedly making for more effective crease removal. The iron does glide over clothes with ease although I can't say whether this is the soleplate in action or is typical for all Philips irons. The Ionic DeepSteam system, on the other hand, is a real marvel and extremely effective, with the ability to remove stubborn creases that would leave other irons struggling. Putting creases into clothes is equally easy and once done they look crisp and distinct. It's true that neither of these technologies would ever make ironing a joy but anything that can help the process should be welcomed and both these definitely do help, the Ionic DeepSteam in particular.

The GC4444 feels comfortable in the hand, not too heavy and better made than pretty much all others I've used. It does seem a bit 'plasticky' although I appreciate that there aren't too many materials an iron could be made from, and the Philips does seem one of the sturdiest. It heats up extremely quickly and retains that heat for a long time, so Philips include a protective plate cover you insert the iron into after use rather than leaving it to stand and cool (and burn yourself on).

The GC4444 is a well-equipped, sturdy iron with additions over the GC4340 that I feel are more than worth the extra money. If you've seen its sibling and like the look of it, give this one serious consideration as for only 18 more you'd be getting the premium Philips iron with a host of useful technologies.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Iron!   January 18, 2008

Wow! This is a fantastic iron! It irons so easily - it just glides and irons the deepest creases straight away. I HATE ironing but it's left me wanting to iron just about anything I can lay my hands on. We purchased the Domena XPress for 250 and were bitterly disappointed and this in comparison is a dream. How sad - getting excited about an iron on a Friday night!!

5 out of 5 stars Does the job really well   June 16, 2008

I wouldn't say I know much about ironing, and I've never particularly liked doing it, but I decided to replace our old steam iron with this one and I have been really impressed. I find it makes a much better job of the ironing, so I get through it quicker. The steam seems to take out all the creases. I have only tried the ionic steam once so far(on a pair of jeans) and it really worked well. It is easy to fill and not too heavy to hold. The protective cover for the hotplate is useful too. I also like the fact that you can adjust the steam.

5 out of 5 stars WELL WORTH THE MONEY   June 7, 2008

Just replaced my old Morphy Richards with this Iron, as it is the most I have spent on an iron... I have to say, it is well worth the money. It glides over any cloth, is a good weight, with lots of steam and a large plate. The 3 metre lead is great as I have a large ironing board. The Linen I have (trousers etc)ironed with ease, as did well-dry jeans and synthetics. Overall, Could not be happier...ironing is a breeze with this wonderful iron!

Irons much better than my 10 year old Krupps when new( 60)
Steam is very good, not sure about the ionic system, as the normal steam setting has easily removed all creases in it's path. glides better than stainless steel in my experience, as a soldier i use many irons on my travels, and the lads are all coming to use mine now which is my only gripe.
