Customer Reviews: Twin tub - flexible washingAugust 11, 2010 J. Freer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love them or loathe them... i think it's fair to say! If you like an automatic then this is not for you.
I used a Hotpoint twintub for several years. The tub paddle annoyed me a little as it tended to wrap clothes round itself and the spinner was too narrow.
These are made in China [it annoyed me when i phoned up to be told they were made in Britain... they're not as you'll see on the box if you buy one]. But that's not a negative as they're probably made better there. There are actually six models available [twintub.co.uk sell all models - certain models are branded names Polar, Harris Classic, Thomson, etc]. The Harris model is the XPB68. All very similar but the Jetstream is a more rugged machine [which is what i'd go for another time].
The washing action is very good - perhaps the best available of any washing machine. I look after my incontinent mother so i need the flexibility of a manual machine. The spinner is 8-9 ins diameter and so will easily take a blanket. Not having a heater is only a disadvantage if you suddenly have to leave the washing and come back an hour or so later as you'll have to drain the water and start again - whereas the Hotpoint with heater it didn't matter. This house was plumbed for a hot and cold pipe for the washing machine so i just extended the hose [a modern house probably only has the one (as most washing machines now only use cold water intake) but otherwise probably worth having a plumber put a hot supply pipe in]. The supplied hose for use on a tap isn't really worth using in my view... they tend to slip off. I've now made up a 'tee' connection for the supply of hot and cold to the washing tub inlet (Europa car spares sell a 'tee' with 10mm nozzles and a 10-12mm connector - machine inlet is 12mm and standard washing machine pipe is 10mm) - saves water coming out of the hose when transferring the hose back to the sink after filling.
In summary - excellent washing machine that benefits from a little plumbing mod for everyday use. The negative in my view is that the lids are hinged rather poorly and with enthusiastic use would probably break - perhaps one of the more expensive models are a bit more robust. The spinner is fine but the more expensive models are quite a bit faster. I'd give this model 4 stars due to the construction but probably 5 stars for the Jetstream.
