Francis Francis X1 is ace! April 15, 2008 Mr. P. Campbell (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I disagree with Caramac girls review. My Cappuccino cups fit fine under the spout and the plastic pouring spouts also fit properly. It looks cool, makes great coffee and the frother/ milk heater is more powerful than some. Buy it.

I saw these in Italy about 5 or 6 years ago, and bought one on my return to England. I've never had any issues with cup sizes (I use regular espresso or cappucino cups), and mine came with a metal spout, which has always fitted without any problem. It still makes fantastic coffee after 5 years. If/when it does finally throw in the towel, I'll be replacing it with one exactly the same.
Seems to be a good quality machine - hope it lasts! October 1, 2008 A. Gill (UK) I'm pretty happy with my new machine - it's well built, attractive and easy to use. It also produces excellent coffee with the Illy ground coffee supplied with it. The frother seems to work well (although it does feel slightly wobbly) and with a bit of practice I'm hoping I can master it. The boiler heats up fairly quickly and clearly indicates when it has reached the required temperature. No real complaints so far.
Lovely retro look but not as good as it should be January 14, 2008 Caramac girl (Wiltshire, UK) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I wanted one of these machines for a while before finally buying this one. I wanted to go for the Kitchenaid one (over 500 pounds!)but my husband persuaded me this one was fine. I have now discovered a couple of annoying glitches the first one being that the one and two cup spouts supplied with the machine are plastic (not metal like those with other machines) and they don't fit under the filter properly and fall off. This means that we can't use them and have to make single cups every time - which is a faff if you have 3 or 4 coffees to make - either that or fiddle around pouring coffee from one cup into another or use a small jug etc.....Which brings me onto the other frustrating thing which is that there isn't much 'headroom' for a cup under the filter (even less with the spout attached) - only short espresso cups fit and so if you wanted cappucino you have to pour the espresso into a bigger cup to give room for the steamed milk. I now know that the Kitchenaid is higher and so would take taller cups and mugs. I guess the X1 is made this way so that it's not too tall to fit on the kitchen worktop where there is a wall cupboard above but it does compromise it's function. I have to say despite these frustrations it looks lovely, I use it every day, it works very well, has a good sized water reservoir, heats up in good time, it makes great coffee, (but I'm drinking too much!) Overall 325 pounds feels too much to pay for something that isn't quite what it should be.

I was so looking forward to receiving this Francis Francis machine. I had done my research, read the reviews and decided I would splash out and treat myself to a classic coffee machine - with the looks and at the price surely the quality to keep me in coffee heaven for years to come. Made by the the same people who make my favourite brand Illy what could go wrong? Well for starters - whilst it looks great, it's not very practcal. As another reviewer pointed out, you can not anything much bigger than an egg cup under the brewhead, the milk frother is too short, and the water reservoir is too small, and when you need to fill it, the silly pipe they use to draw the water off dribbles all over the side. Infact everytime I touched the machine a little puddle of water / milk / coffee seemed to need to be wiped up. All this may be accceptable to some, after all it does look great, however the machine I recieved leaked rather badly between the brewhead and the coffee holder - resulting in gritty horible coffee. Its gone back and Ive bought a Siemans machine - that doesn't look as good but makes great coffee everytime.
